Respected engineer had distinguished Navy career

John Ingolf Hardy, a career naval officer and aviator who was commanding officer of the aircraft carrier Hornet and of the Naval Weapons Center in China Lake when the Sidewinder missile was developed, died July 16 due to complications from a fall at La Costa Glen Retirement Community in Carlsbad. He was 91.
